Impacts of zonal winds on planetary oscillations and Saturn ring seismology

چکیده
The excitation of density and bending waves in Saturn's C ring by planetary oscillation modes presents a unique opportunity to learn about gas giant interiors rotation. However, theoretical complications related rapid differential rotation pose barrier the full utilization wave detections. We calculate using complete, non-perturbative treatment modelled after zonal winds self-consistently computed, polytropic equilibria. find that previous, approximate treatments effects Saturn overestimate shifts frequencies fundamental (f-modes) thought be responsible for majority detected ring, due an omitted modification equilibrium shape structure planet bias introduced these frequency overestimates is small, but significant relative uncertainties afforded Cassini data. additionally consider Saturn-like on rotational mixing f-modes internal gravity (g-modes), which relevant detections multiple with very closely split pattern speeds. higher order can produce orders-of-magnitude enhancements surface gravitational perturbations g-modes dominated large spherical harmonic degrees $\ell$, regardless separation from sectoral f-mode. Despite this enhancement, we observed fine-splitting unlikely involve $\ell\gtrsim 10$. This restriction may aid inference possible structures Saturn.

A note on “Constraints on deep-seated zonal winds inside Jupiter and Saturn”
a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t discuss an important consideration for models of zonal winds deep within giant planets. However, the constraints they propose for the depth of the winds are based on their prescriptions for the internal structures of the magnetic field and zonal winds. The same kinematic analysis applied to other plausible configurations would produce no constraint on the d...
متن کاملThermal forces on planetary ring particles : application to the main system of Saturn ,
Context. The motion of small particles in planetary rings is affected in the long-term by radiation forces. While the PoyntingRobertson effect has been extensively discussed and applied to the dynamics of micron-sized ring particles, studies of thermal selfacceleration of particles are only in their infancy. Aims. We extend the pioneering work of Rubincam (2006, Icarus 184, 532) by a more thoro...
متن کاملIntra-seasonal Oscillations (ISO) of zonal-mean meridional winds and temperatures as measured by UARS
Based on an empirical analysis of measurements with the High Resolution Doppler Imager (HRDI) on the UARS spacecraft in the upper mesosphere (95 km), persistent and regular intra-seasonal oscillations (ISO) with periods of about 2 to 4 months have recently been reported in the zonal-mean meridional winds. Similar oscillations have also been discussed independently in a modeling study, and they ...
متن کاملPlanetary seismology: High risk, high return
Except for specialists, planetary seismology refers first to Earth seismology, and stimulates thoughts about earthquakes, tsunamis, and all such rare and brutal events that everyone knows by experience and/or fears. According to etymology, seismology shakes and shocks our bodies and our minds. According to semantics, all languages make the difference between “superficial” and “deep” things, so ...
متن کاملCassini imaging of Saturn: Southern hemisphere winds and vortices
[1] High-resolution images of Saturn’s southern hemisphere acquired by the Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem between February and October 2004 are used to create maps of cloud morphology at several wavelengths, to derive zonal winds, and to characterize the distribution, frequency, size, morphology, color, behavior, and lifetime of vortices. Nonequatorial wind measurements display only minor di...
